It used to be the case that things in Europe were far less repressed than in the USA but alas, the tide has turned and perhaps only the Dutch, Germans, and Scandi countries now retain a healthy approach to both sexuality and interpersonal relationships. Personally I blame the tsunami of Hollywood culture that has infested the world and spread toxic ideas far too widely and deeply.
