It’s actually very well documented that when Einstein spoke of “god” he meant the laws of physics; his “god” was not dissimilar to that of Spinoza, which is about as far from most people’s idea of a god as it’s possible to get while still using the same word. Furthermore, just because Einstein was a great physicist doesn’t mean his thoughts on matters outside that domain are necessarily interesting. History is resplendent with examples of people who were very clever in one domain but astonishingly obtuse in others. So the implicit notion that “if Einstein thought there was a god then there must be a god because Einstein was clever” is a logical non-sequitur.
Perhaps if US citizens weren’t stuck in a pre-modern mentality of gods and goblins there would be less of a tendency to chatter about such nonsensical things and more of a tendency to focus on the very many real-world problems we ought to be (but are not) confronting today.
