It's also the case that human decision-making is profoundly limited by our evolutionary hardwiring. As we're a primate group species we are obsessed with our social rank relative to others. So when someone is offered $5 on condition another person gets nothing, or alternatively they can choose to get $25 on condition another person gets $50, most people choose the $5 option even though it means losing out on an additional $20. This is because we'd rather have a little of something while our neighbor gets nothing, than to get a lot of something while our neighbor gets even more. With this sort of thing hardwired into our brains, it's not surprising the average person is incapable of even modestly coherent and rational decision-making.
