It’s perhaps also worth noting that what we can term “literary sex” is often decried by critics at first, only to gain praise in subsequent years after the initial reaction has been forgotten. This reaction was inverted during the 1970s when it became fashionable to praise books containing sex scenes even when these scenes were clearly irrelevant to the narrative. Today we’re back in Puritan City, so I expect the critical reaction to truly innovative writing about human sexuality will once again be condemned before ultimately being lauded.
