It's possible to read anything one likes into any work of literature, provided one ignores all pertinent facts. Your teacher was basically a moron. But because a moron misinterprets a work of literature, that does not mean we should start banning books. Such a position is intellectually indefensible and morally just as flawed as the teacher's interpretation - which would be inconceivable to the author himself. We really need to stop pretending we have a right to have our sensitivities cosseted at all costs, because the harm created by this attitude matches and often exceeds the harm done by mysogenistic idiots. There are far, far better ways to counter sexism. Banning books (what next: burning them?) is a fool's position.
