It's rather difficult to follow the argument presented in this article - it seems more stream-of-consciousness than anything else, and meanders somewhat randomly between half-made points and dead-ends.

The notion that France's insistence on laicite is in fact "disempowering" women is very odd indeed; surely forcing a woman to wear a burka is in reality far more disempowering than insisting that women have a right to dress in comfortable practical clothing suited for the 21st century rather than the 8th century? Or are we now so PC that we'll start arguing that female genital mutilation is more "authentic" than leaving girls intact?

The problem may come from the fact the author seems to conflate sexuality with equality, which is a poor basis for promoting any coherent argument. We still, unfortunately, have some way to go in the West when it comes to achieving full equality for women (though we're miles ahead relative to the rest of the world) but I don't think we will make progress if the core argument is incoherent.
