It's worth noting that in all the examples cited in this interesting article, it is the fact of representative democracy that enables the self-harm. The idea that adequate outcomes can spontaneously arise from a system in which the ignorant and simple-minded vote for the incompetent and mendacious is, to put it mildly, stretching optimism rather too far.
