It's worth noting that when Romans, and the Greeks before them, drank wine they usually did so mixed with water. Given the impurities present in water back then, the alcohol in the wine acted as a mild disinfectant. The Greeks were very strict about proportions and one could gain a bad reputation if one added too much wine to one's water.
