Mark, it would be delightful if we could live in a world in which your optimism was justified. Alas, we live in a very different world, and in fact Trump will win re-election in 2020 for the following very obvious reasons:

(i) His supporters don’t care about facts, logic, or even the consequences of his actions. They are simple-minded ignorant people who are cheering for their quarterback. They have no cognitive ability to deal with anything approaching reality and they adore Trump because he speaks to them in their own language. Nothing else matters;

(ii) The Republican Party cares only about the illusion of power and they know they can’t oppose the dull-eyed mob that now constitutes the majority of their support. Hence they will back Trump even if he nukes California;

(iii) The Democratic primary is a setpiece example of political irrelevance; instead of focusing on beating Trump by the only mechanism possible (humiliating him live on camera and making him wet himself) they are all attempting to out-virtue-signal each other and thus each candidate is narrowing their base.

All this means that Trump will win re-election with a majority of votes cast this time round, rather than merely because of the USA’s irredeemably dysfunctional Electoral College.

The USA is over. The Congress is merely equivalent to the Roman Senate under the Caesars: a hollowed-out shell of what was once something of significance. Tyranny is coming with fleet footsteps.
