While the Internet is very much a mixed blessing - and, I believe, overall a detriment to society - it nevertheless enables those with great talent and no small amount of luck to amass an audience from around the world and thereby compensate in some small way for the lack of patronage that used to be provided by wealthy members of society's privileged classes.

Thus, for example, Lauridsen, Pärt , and other serious composers do manage to create and promulgate masterpieces despite the fact 99.9% of people who subscribe to Spotify will never become aware of their works, preferring instead whatever insipid pop music happens to be transiently fashionable.
