Most people have very little self-awareness, and even less understanding of evolutionary psychology. This leads to an amusing contradiction wherein people claim to believe in "equality" while simultaneously wanting males to provide in order to "prove" mate-worthiness, as per hundreds of thousands of years of evolution. The inherent contradiction is not recognized, because ordinary people are quite good at not seeing the blindingly obvious.
