Most religionists are stunningly ignorant about the origins of their particular mythology. Few who follow the Christian mythology, for example, know that the Old Testament is a mashup of dozens of previous myths, and the New Testament is likewise an agglomeration of many earlier myths. By way of example, here's a story about a man-god who founded a new way of thinking, came to save mankind, was killed by his enemies, and then ascended to the heavens. His name? Romulus. One of 17 similar stories that were popular over a long period prior to the emergence of the Christian mythology. So it's pretty clear that the internal coherence of any mythology will be doubtful at best, as all are mashups of previous stories. It's also clear than none can "explain" anything at all, but all do serve as a warning about how poorly the human intellect functions.
