The driver’s seat deserves sense and sensibility

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that whomsoever finds themselves to be behind the steering wheel of a motorized vehicle must be an above-average driver.

Alas, gentle reader, it is my sorry duty to inform you that this conceit is simply false. Moreover, our reflexive belief in such a conceit renders us all more liable for the unwanted outcomes that daily disfigure our highways and byways and bring new supplicants into the Accident & Emergency rooms of hospitals around our sea-blue globe. With every hour that is counted upon the face of a clock, bodies are rent asunder by the forces imposed upon them. Families are shattered, lives cut short, and a great deal of inconvenience is experienced by those caught in the resultant traffic jams.

None of this is in any way desirable, particularly to those of delicate sensibilities.

Some inquisitive souls among my readership may wonder why nearly everyone imagines themselves to be an above-average driver. Surely even the most rudimentary application of statistical theory would render such an assumption notably risible?
