My book Why Democracy Failed analyzes the fundamental weaknesses of representative democracy, shows why democracy (pace Plato) always ends in tyranny - albeit often dressed up as democracy - and why we can now do a lot better than Plato could have imagined, if only we abandon our fantasies about democracy being a good thing. There are plenty of better alternatives to kings, "philosopher-kings" and all the rest of the Axial-age ideas. We simply have to begin by recognizing what should be self-evident: any system built on the idea of mendacious incompetents gaining power by lying to stupid ignorant people is always without exception going to result in very low-quality outcomes. Democracy is a failed accidental 200+ year experiment. It's time to write up the results and move on.
