My own feeling, for what it may be worth, is that atheism is much like a candle flame: it’s not a “thing” in its own right but rather the result of an underlying phenomenon. In the case of the candle flame the real phenomenon is oxidation of carbon; in the case of atheism the real phenomenon is the intellectual capacity to grasp complex reality rather than being stuck in childish solipsisms about fairytale invisible magical creatures.
