One important omission is that a superpower (or indeed any nation aspiring to basic adequacy) needs a reasonably stable political system in which all players adhere to basic rules (more-or-less telling the truth most of the time). Today the USA fails on every single one of these measures, as the Republican Party and its many enablers have no interest in anything other than seizing and holding power by any means available.

One could also add that a superpower (or any nation aspiring to basic adequacy) needs to look after its citizens. The USA famously has a minimal safety-net for those who fall on hard times, and is the only OECD nation in which people can lose everything if they are unlucky enough to fall ill.

What this means is that while the USA's military might remains - for the time being - largely intact, it's rotting from the inside in a way not entirely dissimilar to the way Russia rotted from the inside. And if we begin to consider the provision of adequate education for all citizens, the USA's failure becomes even more apparent.

All in all, the future may not be very bright.
