One major problem with the "aliens out there" issue is that most people lack even a rudimentary understanding of the issues and instead have been ineradicably influenced by Hollywood fantasy. So intelligent conversation here on Earth is almost as implausible as any interaction with a putative technological alien species elsewhere.
