One of our primary limitations as a species is that our brains are hardwired to seek simplicity and avoid complexity. Ordinary people reliably fall for fairytales, but even scientists frequently fail to compensate for their inbuilt perspective bias. Slowly, we learn by failure after failure - but the sensationalist mass media prefers sound-bites and misleading stories that totally distort the results of experiments. At some point we have to hope that more adequate experiments are explained more adequately to the general public, but that feels like it will be a very long way off indeed.
