One of the fascinating things about human beings is our ability to take a bad idea and institutionalize it to the point where it may take centuries to eradicate. Given our history, I would guess that no amount of logic will prevent us from attempting to use hydrogen in the ways you outline and thereby hugely increasing our overall energy requirements by building-in enormous inefficiencies. All we need now is for a hydrogen cartel to form, to set the market price, and we can transition seamlessly from OPEC to OHEC, and the upside is that "oh heck" is much more polite than "f*ck, we screwed up again..."
