One of the many reasons I left the UK for California 28 years ago was the curious British fear of success. The loss of Empire was, perhaps, a psychological blow from which the British never truly recovered and hence a deep-seated preference for failure, mediocrity, and self-mockery took over. No wonder so many voted for Brexit — the ultimate guarantee of perpetual under-performance and self-inflicted misery.
