One of the many systemic defects of representative democracy is that there's no candidates available for informed thoughtful voters to support. Politicians quickly learn that bloc votes are obtained by mouthing empty soundbites and promising free ice-cream. Anything else is tactical suicide. So the idea of younger people voting for change is naive, because by definition there will never be anyone truly worth voting for, because sensible policies are death for any aspiring politician.

What we really need is a more adequate approach to governance. Democracy, as Plato noted 2,500 years ago, inevitably always ends up delivering tyranny. It's only ever a question of how rapidly this occurs.
