One of the sad things about the human brain is its limitations. So many people imagine false binaries such as "we should spend money on schools, not on soldiers." Well, guess what? In the real world a lot of things need to be paid for. Imagine if a parent said, "no more food until we have a new roof on the house." One of the main roles of government is supposed to be determining how best to spend available revenues so as to extract the most overall social benefit. Of course, governments don't really do this - democracy doesn't permit it - but there is no excuse for failing to grasp the simple fact that you can't reduce life down to binary choices.
