One other small point: startup CEOs are often terrible at firing people, yet one bad performer can hurt the entire company. Not only do many CEOs want to avoid the emotional unpleasantness that comes with firing someone but they also believe it will “send the wrong message” to the rest of the team. From my personal experience, however, the rest of the team will be relieved that the CEO made the hard decision promptly instead of seeking to duck the issue.
