Ordinary people always believe whatever nonsense they are fed by purported authority figures, so it's not really surprising that ordinary Russians have absorbed Kremlin lies. Lest we in the West imagine ourselves to be superior, we need only remember the general US enthusiasm for its illegal invasion of Iraq not so many years ago, and the way in which ordinary US citizens swallowed the lies about WMDs.
