Our species evolved to cope with life on the African savannah and in the primordial forests of Eurasia where the most complex tasks were flint-napping and making fire by means of friction. Our complex modern world with its everyday magical devices is simply beyond the capacity of most people to comprehend, never mind navigate responsibly. Although engineers do eventually catch up with human incapacity (airbags & crumple zones, ATMs that return the card before dispensing the cash, childproof containers, safety kettles) they’re always far behind the curve and so we’re always self-harming in more and more ways as more and more new devices and options become available. On the bright side, even with unsurpassed human idiocy rampant everywhere, we’re all still a great deal safer than we were 25,000 years ago.
