Penrose's theory is riddled with problems, not least the fact that it depends on us living in anti-deSitter space, whereas we know that we live in a universe that is most definitely not an anti-deSitter space.

Far more interesting (because it is at least plausible and conforms to what we know about the universe we really live in) is Alan Guth's notion of eternal inflation - it's a shame that isn't even mentioned in this article.
