People have always been stupid. Today, however, stupidity is monetizable in a way previously impossible, and so the mass media is incentivized to undermine society to an even greater extent than previously. If one were to attempt to design a system for large-scale self-harm one would find it difficult to do better than the systems we've accidentally permitted to flourish.
