Personally I hope the anecdote about the chamber-pot had a germ of truth to it. The so-called Socratic Method is amusing the first time, and can even be vaguely helpful; repeated more than once it is merely a tedious parlor trick and enough to irritate anyone within earshot. My personal belief is that we should regard Xanthippe’s action (if historically factual) not as petulance but as a legitimate and condign act of philosophical criticism.
