Politicians must always be “seen to be doing something” regardless of how wise or foolish those things may be. We appear to be so gripped by media-induced panic that we’ve failed to ask a simple question: should we really be throwing hundreds of millions of people out of work and reducing them to penury in order to save tens of thousands of old and sick people who would have died anyway a matter of a few weeks or months later? No one will ask this question because (a) no one thinks rationally during mass hysteria, and (b) the question will be misunderstood as being “heartless.” But is it really heartless to ask if it is a moral act to harm hundreds of millions in order temporarily to extend the lives of those who are anyway about to die?
