Politicians should rarely if ever make military decisions. Bakhmut was for months a useful way to tie up and deplete Russian resources, but should have been abandoned about 10 days ago, having served its purpose in this regard. But Zelensky seems to be making the same mistake Putin made: conflating tactical advantage and psychological advantage. It would have been better to let the Russians take Bakhmut, first having rigged everything possible to blow once Russians were nicely ensconced. Then a major offensive elsewhere could have been undertaken using the tiny trickle of Western armor provided to date. As it is, Ukraine seems now to be depleting what little it has, for no strategic value. This may be because the Zelensky administration is terrified of Ukraine's top general gaining too much public attention. Zelensky has achieved a lot, but may undermine Ukraine by making unwise decisions.
