Sadly few will remember Republican cowardice and their craven enablement of Trump, because the USA is the Land of Forgetting. Everything is a transient sensation, to be forgotten tomorrow when the next transient sensation arrives. And US citizens are unique in the world insofar as the vast majority cling to the notion that they really do live in Disneyworld, in which being a team player and hard work will result in mom & apple pie in the ‘greatest country in the world.” Hey, it must be true because we’ve heard it so many times!

Elsewhere people have a more accurate assessment of the countries they live in. Russians know that despite Putin “making Russia great again” they live in a kleptocracy. Italians know, despite voting for Salvini, that they live in a mafia-run state. The French know they have major social issues. And on and on. Except for the USA where people don’t understand that they live in a country as corrupt as Italy and as skewed towards the ultra-rich as any third-world nation. What Republican voter knows, for example, that 86% of the GOP’s votes over the last 20 years have been to favor the ultra-wealthy at the expense of everyone else? Who can be bothered to look at the data! We’re too busy watching Netflix.

And so it’s easy to forget, to airbrush out of recollection all the horrors that the USA inflicts on a daily basis. Because forgetting is one of the core features of being “an American.”

But historians will remember. And they will record the Republican Party under the same column as those who supported the Nazis in Germany and Stalin in Russia and Pol Pot in Cambodia and Mugabe in Zimbabwe and Mobuto in the Congo. Because the Republican Party has enabled pure evil, even if a huge number Americans themselves can’t see it and won’t remember it.
