Sci-fi is basically cowboys in space, so we can't expect it to be informative. The problem comes when people fail to distinguish between entertainments and reality. In fact, the distinction is very easy: pretty much everything you get in entertainments are misleading, whereas reality is amenable to empirical investigation. Sadly, most people are intellectually incapable of making the distinction, which is why we're wasting billions in pointless projects to put people into space instead of spending the money on robotic missions that would provide infinitely more knowledge for a fraction of the price of a single human mission to the Moon.
