So if Startpage doesn’t generate revenues from advertising and/or selling user data, how does it pay for all the server capacity it utilizes? There’s only so long you can keep taking investment dollars, and unless it funds itself along the Wikipedia model (which it doesn’t), this means it has to have some sort of monetization strategy. On their website they say they’ve been profitable since 2004 but it’s unclear how that can have been achieved. So…. perhaps a little caution is warranted?
