Switzerland is full of electric bikes - many use regenerative braking to increase range. People love them in the late Spring, Summer, and early Autumn. After that, nobody uses them because being cold and wet is no fun and is highly impractical if you're on your way to work. Electric bikes are a nice toy, but they're not a second car replacement for a 2-car family where both adults need to commute to work, pick up the kids, transport groceries, etc. In short they are a pleasant affectation for middle class folk who can afford to indulge their whims. Nothing wrong with that, but let's not over-state the case for such toys.
