It may be worth noting also that while overall calories consumed and digested per day do matter, the problem for the typical US citizen (and increasingly a problem for Brits, Hungarians, Mexicans, and so many others) is that they get more than enough calories but drastically insufficient nutrients. In fact the USA is now the first country in the world to have people who are simultaneously morbidly obese and chronically malnourished. Any diet that precludes intake of sufficient macro and micro nutrients will lead to ill health regardless of whether or not one is “calorie counting.” Sadly, most fad diets lead to deficiency diseases if followed for long enough, because they are purely focused on weight loss and not on health.
