Thanks to always-on media entirely reliant on sensation in order to grab monetizable eyeballs for a few moments, we've amplified normal human idiocy. Politics is nowadays a sub-section of the entertainment industry, which obviously means that clowns like Trump, Johnson, et al are elevated to the highest positions of power merely because they are vaguely amusing. Better to horrify a million with a disgusting and stupid tweet than not to be in the public eye.

Representative democracy guarantees our descent into tyranny. When you have a system in which no qualifications are required in order to be granted the right to vote, and in which no qualifications nor competency are required of candidates, you naturally end up where we are today. It's merely the case that different nations are collapsing at different rates. But all will get to the same end-point (tyranny) eventually, because our beloved system of governance guarantees it.
