The core problem for the USA today is that the Republican Party depends almost entirely on lies and hate and fear. Telling blatant lies to simple-minded people results in a ton of votes, which result in delivery of policies that create further divisions. It's a one-way road to social collapse, but for those playing the game the near-term gains outweigh the longer-term costs. If US citizens weren't so ignorant and complacent ("reckon I jest can't be bothered to find me some facts") the GoP strategy would be far less successful. But as everyone seems to prioritize gawping at empty entertainments, it's clear the GoP will continue to dupe the simple-minded and continue to wield enormous political power.
