The core problems for French startups were simple: (i) lack of access to sufficient capital, (ii) a language-fragmented market, and (iii) government interference. US companies, meanwhile, had a solid VC and legal infrastructure, enjoyed the global dominance of English, and almost no government interference - even in hiring & firing practices. The French never stood a chance.
