The creature Trump was obviously the most infantile and moronic person ever to occupy the White House - hence his appeal. The sad fact is that most people aren't very bright and are even less well-informed. Creatures like Trump appeal to them because seeing a halfwit on TV makes ordinary people feel less inadequate. They identify with him. So facts and reason have no purchase, because ordinary people's loyalty isn't acquired by means of facts and reason. It's acquired by means of simple-minded soundbites and pathetically childish lies. The high road to power is gained by telling inane lies to stupid people.

Which is why representative democracy is such a wonderful and wholesome idea....
