The difference between science and philosophy is the latter is an armchair endeavor largely devoid of proof-tests; the former exists in a perpetual cycle of observation > hypothesis > theory > observation. Unless an idea is in some way falsifiable by means of empirical observation, it may be intellectually entertaining but it's of limited value. The synergy of engineers (who build ever-more-precise instruments to enable ever-more-precise observations & measurements) and theorists is at the core of most scientific endeavors.
