The Economist's article on the nominal superiority of representative democracy is now out-of-date. China is infinitely wealthier than most democracies, and the many systemic flaws of representative democracy are now blindingly evident. It is not enough, however, to note that representative democracy is totally unfit for purpose; it's necessary to propose better alternatives.
