The final phase of representative democracy was never going to be a pleasing picture, and in a way the exact details don’t really matter. What is of more concern than a failed effort to impeach a criminal is the question of what we will eventually create to be more adequate as a system of governance. Sadly we’ll have to pass through horrors first, because most people are entirely unaware of how utterly inadequate representative democracy truly is — despite the examples of Trump, Brexit, Bolsonaro, Orban, Babic, et al.

Remember — all these blustering charlatans are in power because “we the people” put them there. And that’s the core of the problem.
