The history of llefty-trendy contortions is long indeed and goes all the way back to before the 1917 revolution. It's an emotional, rather than an intellectual position, based on rebellion against one's parents and by extension all familiar authority figures. These are the same kinds of people who defended Stalin's purges as "necessary" and who continued to support the USSR long after Solzhenitsyn's The Gulag Archipelago was published (though for my money Один день Ивана Денисовича is a far more powerful indictment). They are, in short, the kind of people anyone with a functioning intellect merely ignores as purveyors of meaningless noise.
