The human brain hates uncertainty and ambiguity, hence we tend to rush for an “answer” instead of being able to tolerate not knowing. In the last 150 years we’ve learned more about reality than at any time in human history and there’s a lot more yet to discover. Unfortunately, idle speculation tends to be either unbounded or just silly. Positing one or more invisible magical deities is an example of the latter (because it’s intellectually void: it solves no problem and merely introduces a meaningless regression). I like eternal inflation as a concept but it is essential for us to remember that it is merely an idea that conveniently can be worked out mathematically. We’re a long way from knowing whether or not eternal inflation and quantum tunneling are, in fact, the way our particular universe arose.
