The larger problem, of course, is that the US Constitution is an inadequate document. Originally a messy compromise required to square the circle of differences between the founding States, it was never envisaged by those who wrote it as a secular Bible but unfortunately that’s what it became. Sure, there have been Amendments, but the fundamentals have remained unchanged — a fact that would shock and greatly disappoint the Founding Fathers. The reality that impeachment is a toothless tiger that no sitting President need ever fear, means essentially that a President is above the law. This is not what the Fathers meant at all, but it’s the consequence of the fact the USA has fetishized its Constitution rather than seeing it as a very imperfect first attempt, to be improved as circumstances require.
