The onus on publish or perish has led to much worthless and even spurious science. Back in 2006 both Nature and Science admitted that half of what they publish is garbage - the problem is, they would never know which half until later. And these are the two most prestigious journals out there. The situation in other journals is likely much worse. Things have not improved at all since then.
