The problem for futurism, including the academic variety a la Toffler's Future Shock, is that no one seems able to comprehend that technologies are interconnected. Instead, as you rightly note, writers just take today's norms and extrapolate upward. In reality, the technology required to do X will also enable Y and Z, and these things will induce social changes. Futurists would do well to study history, because that contains at least a basic guide to the fundamental principles of interconnectedness.
