The problem is, we humans have tiny brains that are atrociously bad at dealing with reality. The consequence is that simple lies nearly always triumph over real-world facts because reality is complex and 99% of people prefer simplicity to complexity because simple things are easier for the human brain to cope with. We’re seeing the consequences of this phenomenon everywhere now with the triumph of populism around the globe (Bolsonaro, Trump, Brexit, Babic, Le Pen, Orban, Salvini, et al). It would be lovely if our species were less intellectually stunted but there’s never been any selection pressure throughout our evolutionary history to promote such an outcome.
