The problem with the general argument is that it rapidly leads to a reducto ad absurdum. We need a more reasoned approach to the topic of self-identification rather than attempting to see things in simplistic up/down yes/no terms. If we fail to do so, we will end up with a situation in which anyone can claim to be anything, and demand legal recognition of their claim regardless of how much harm this may ultimately inflict on others. So instead of facile posturing, we need careful thinking. Which is mostly notable, so far, by its absence.
