The Trump Shooting: Some Much-Needed Perspective

On the day an obese convicted felon received an extremely minor injury, more than 85 US citizens were killed by gun violence

Wherever you look, the media is full of the same story: someone attempted to kill Donald Trump and isn’t it terrible? Violence like this has no place in politics! Wasn’t it great how quickly the Secret Service acted? Thank goodness Trump wasn’t seriously hurt! Democracy has triumphed once more!

But instead of swallowing the usual sensationalist empty-headed media narrative, let’s pause to consider the reality of the situation.

Trump is a convicted criminal who committed treason on at least three separate occasions we know of thanks to publicly-available information. He’s running on a ticket that includes continued strong opposition to all forms of gun control. His Republican Party illegally blocked the nomination of Garland so that Trump could pack the US Supreme Court with poorly-qualified ultra-right hacks who just a couple of weeks ago ruled that when he’s President again he can act in any way he wants with total impunity, including if he orders the detentions and executions of his opponents.
